1,133,126. Dispersions of vinyl ester/ethylene copolymers. B.P. CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 17 March, 1967 [20 April, 1966], No. 17216/66. Heading C3P. A stable aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of a vinyl ester of an organic acid and ethylene is prepared by forming a solution having a predetermined concentration of ethylene in a vinyl ester of a saturated mono-carboxylic acid, passing the solution to a polymerization zone and polymerizing the solution as an aqueous emulsion in the presence of a free radical catalyst, a surface active agent and/or a protective colloid whilst maintaining the zone full of emulsion at sufficient pressure to retain the ethylene in solution. In examples were used: ethylene and vinyl acetate; sodium decyl benzene sulphonate, nonyl phenol-ethylene oxide condensate, polyvinyl alcohol, potassium bicarbonate, water, ammonium persulphate, formic acid and sodium metabisulphite. |
