The method of measuring small electric charges uses two conducting components, one fixed (1), the other mobile (2), mounted in the same supporting system. The mobile component may be a washer threaded over a rod or a sphere 2 held in a tube 3. In the absence of charges, the two components are in contact. Giving an electric charge to the system drives 2 to the top of the tube and the two components remain apart. When the charge disappears, they come into contact once more. Applications include radiation dosimetry. The collecting electrode on an ionisation chamber carries the above electrometer device. At the beginning, the two components are charged and separated. Ions collected by the chamber discharge the system and the components come into contact once more. <IMAGE>
