Backacter loader with a boom which is subdivided into an initial boom (9) and a main boom (18), the main boom being linked to the free end (17) of the initial boom (9). The initial boom is pivotably mounted on the front end of the slewing ring (3) of the machine and can assume a position inclined to the rear, in which its free end is clearly located behind the axis of rotation of the slewing ring and above the slewing ring. In this position, the main boom can be folded back onto the initial boom and extend essentially horizontally to the front, its front end being located roughly above the front part of the machine. In this position, the arm (24) carrying the tool can in principle be directed vertically downwards. This facilitates the loading work. For the excavating work, the boom is unfolded roughly until extension of the initial boom and is locked relative to the latter.
