PURPOSE:To obtain efficiently high quality alkali hydroxide by the electrolysis of an aqueous soln. of alkali chloride in a horizontal diaphragm method electrolytic cell by installing an impermeable electrode as the electrode in the cathode chamber placed under the ion exchange membrane and by specifying the velocity of a flow of an electrolytic soln. CONSTITUTION:When electrolysis is carried out in an electrolytic cell divided into anode and cathode chambers with a horizontally stretched cation exchange membrane, the electrode in the cathode chamber placed under the membrane is made impermeable to gas and liq. The initial linear velocity of an electrolytic soln. fed to the cathode chamber is regulated to >=about 8cm/sec. By making the electrode in the cathode chamber impermeable, the remaining of gas in the space between said membrane and electrode can be prevented, so high quality alkali hydroxide is efficiently obtd. The electrolytic voltage can be dropped by regulating said initial linear velocity. |
