A wall covering comprises a non-fibrous sheet, e.g. paper, having on the side for application to the wall a resinous or wax shear coating and a water-activatable adhesive on the shear coating, which shear coating is of tensile and shear strength such that. after the paper has been applied to the wall, it is dry-strippable therefrom. A protective layer, e.g. of polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl acetate copolymer, may be applied to the wear surface which may be embossed or carry a decorative layer. The shear coating may comprise polyvinylchloride, polyvinyl acetate, or polystyrene or copolymers of these monomers, or a polyacrylate, waxes and blends of resins and waxes and may contain fillers such as china clay, whiting or talc. Soluble starch and cellulose derivatives may be added. The adhesive coating may be applied as a powder to the still moist shear coating and may comprise cellulose derivatives, starches or other specified natural and synthetic materials. The adhesive may also be applied as an aqueous solution to the dried shear coat. |
