<p>Pivalolactone, which can be polymerised to give products suitable for film and fibre prodn., is produced in >90% yields by reacting chloropivalic acid with alkali alcoholate, pref. NaOH (solid or in alcohol soln.)., in the absence of H2O at -30 to +20 degrees C to give alkali metal chloropivalate, adding H2O and heating to give (I), and extracting (I) with a water-immiscible solvent.</p> |
