Disadvantage in known techniques of preparing materials made of collagen by finely dividing a refined collagen material to obtain a dispersion of collagen fibres and forming the desired material from the collagen fibres, such as insufficient tear strength, are overcome by a process wherein the refined collagen material is either A) immersed in a mixture of an aqueous acidic solution and a hydrophilic organic solvent or B) swelled with an aqueous acidic solution followed by dispersion of the resultant swollen material in a hydrophilic organic solvent before being finely divided. The material that is produced can be used as casings for foodstuffs.
