Cytostatic medicaments contain short chain fatty acid esters and/or hydroxylated fatty acid esters and/or ketonic fatty acid esters. Pref. cpds. are butyric acid esters (such as glycerine tributyrate) beta-hydroxybutyric acid esters and acetyl-acetic acid esters. Used to treat cancer/tumours. Doses of 200-1000 mmoles are necessary each 24 hrs. Generally the unit dose is 400 mmoles of active substance and the injection takes about 2 hrs. The theory behind the effectiveness of the above cpds. is discussed in detail. In an example, glycerine tributyrate (35.0 g), lecithin (9.55 g) and isotonic phosphate buffer (33.0 g) were homogenised. The homogenate was placed in ampoules and sterilised to give an injectable soln.
