[Also in Division C3] A process for making ceramic articles comprises spray-drying an aqueous emulsion of ceramic powder and organic binder material to give a dry mixture, moulding the mixture to form an article and heating the article to remove the organic material and sinter the ceramic. The organic material may comprise a polyalkylene and a plasticizer for the polyalkylene. A preferred composition comprises alumina, polyethylene and butyl and/or aluminium stearate, the binder and plasticizer together forming 11-22% by wt. of the dry mixture. The mixture may be injectionmoulded at 200-450‹ F. and 2000-18000 p.s.i. and the resulting article heated to remove 55-80% of the organic material and then fired to remove the remainder and sinter the ceramic article. Beryllia may also be used as the ceramic. |
