A chain saw (10) has an auxiliary device (28) which consists of a strut (30) which is firmly clamped in a releasable manner to the two handles (16 and 18) of the saw. A rotary handle (54) is rotatably mounted on the front end of the strut above the machine handle (18). If the rotary handle (54) is turned, a bell-crank lever (42) is pivoted via a tie rod (58). The bottom arm of the bell-crank lever (42) actuates the speed control member of the machine (10). The auxiliary device permits one-hand operation for moving the saw and for controlling the speed. <IMAGE>
