The paper machine comprises at least one water-permeable drainage belt (wire 1 or 12) to form a fibre mat, in particular a ply of a multi-ply fibre mat, and a headbox device (15 or 16) for feeding a stock suspension which is to be applied in a free jet to the drainage belt (wire 1 or 12). Between the headbox device (15) and the section (1a, 12a), running along the latter, of the drainage belt (wire 1 or 12), at least one deflection device (51), which can be introduced into an edge region of the free jet, is located for separating off and removing a part stream of the stock suspension. This arrangement allows, for example, an infinitely variable adjustment of the format width of the fibre mat to be produced. In this case, the part stream diverted before the formation of the fibre mat is kept away from the downstream working regions of the paper machine, in particular from a second fibre mat located there, and, if desired - for reutilisation of the unmixed fibre material - recycled into the stock feeding system upstream of the headbox device (15 or 16). <IMAGE>
