A process for making granules of a surface-modified alkali metal metasilicate pentahydrate either by heating alkali metal metasilicate pentahydrate granules at a temperature of 60-80 DEG C for 1-20 seconds, or by spraying alkali metal metasilicate pentahydrate granules with an alkali metal silicate solution having a temperature of 60-100 DEG C and the composition SiO2.XNa2O.YH2O wherein X = 0.5-1.1 and Y = 3-5. The surface-modified granules have a low tendency to giving off water, thereby reducing the risk of decomposition of the chlorine compound which, together with the metasilicate granules and other conventional components, is included in the dishwashing or other detergent composition. |
