The present invention relates to a process for the selective preparation of alcohols, in particular of ethanol, which is characterised in that 1) methanol, 2) carbon monoxide, 3) hydrogen, 4) cobalt, 5) iodine, 6) ruthenium and 7) a special phosphorus-containing ligand are introduced into a reaction zone and the contents are then treated in the reaction zone at elevated temperature and elevated pressure for a sufficiently long period to convert the methanol into ethanol. |
