PURPOSE:To obtain a high print quality at a low cost by providing a contactor and a vertically moving platen with forward or reverse rotation control of a step motor. CONSTITUTION:A carrier unit is equipped with a print head 2, a ribbon cartridge 3, a contactor 4 and the like and supported with support guide shafts 5a and 5b. A supporting plate 7 equipped with a platen 6 is supported with supporting shafts 8a and 8b in such a manner as to be movable vertically. When a print medium 17 is sucked, with the counterclockwise rotation of a step motor 16, the platen 6 rises to press the print medium 17 against the contactor 4 and then, the motor 16 is rotated clockwise to lower the platen 6 so slightly that the clearance is set at a specified value between the printing surface of the medium 17 and the tip of the print head 2. Thus, printing is ready to perform. This detection of medium thickness can solve problems such as damage to the medium 17, smeared copying paper, unwanted transfer and dents and reduce the processing time. |
