Marine invertebrates, partic. star-fish, are washed, dehydrated by being conveyed through a heated tunnel and ground into a powder. The conditions in the drying tunnel are selected to produce a crisp-baked prod. Pref. the tunnel temp. is kept between 150-200 deg.C and the tunnel is simultaneously aerated. Star-fish with a spread of about 10 to 15 cm require about 45-60 minutes in these tunnel conditions. Larger star-fish require an extra 10 minutes or so for every 3-5 cm on the spread over the 15 cm max. of the normal range. The prod. is pref. spaced from the heaters by at least 20 cms. Since the crisp-baked prod. is completely dehydrated, it is partic. easy to mix in correct proportions with other dry ingredients. A completely dry feeding stuff can be produced which avoids any danger of intestinal fermentation when rearing delicate animals such as young chickens, young partridges, young guinea-fowl etc. For fertilising agricultural land, the powder can be directly applied and is readily assimilated at a rate of about 20 gm/square metre. |
