The item transport mechanism has a detector controlling the movement, which is effected by a chamber in the housing and with a flexible wall (9). A medium under pressure is delivered to and discharged from the chamber via unions, to move the wall between positions and thus actuate a component (14, 15), which in turn moves the item. The detector can be pivot-mounted, protruding into the path of the items handled. A plug shuts off the discharge from the chamber when an item is not bearing against it.
