In a process for eliminating a bolster during the winding of yarns by random winding, a change of the traversing speed is made when the spindle rotational speed approaches a multiple of the speed where there is a risk of formation of a bolster. A safety distance between the spindle rotational speed and the multiple of the traversing speed where there is a risk of formation of a bolster is predetermined. The safety distance and the change of the traversing speed are in a predetermined ratio to one another. The safety distance and this ratio are selected so that a change of the traversing speed causes multiples of the traversing speed where there is a risk of formation of a bolster to be jumped in as short a time as possible. For a multi-station textile machine having a central traversing drive, a suitable device for carrying out the process for eliminating a bolster is provided. Spinning bobbins of novel dimensions can be produced by means of the process. <IMAGE>
