PURPOSE:To obtain a display element capable of displaying a high quality image with high resolution and having superior driving performance, productivity and reliability by forming a front plate and a transparent liq. contacting with one side of the plate so as to provide specified refractive indexes. CONSTITUTION:A radiant light abosrbing layer 1, a liq. layer 2 and a transparent protective plate (front plate) 3 are laminated to fabricate a display element. The liq. of the liq. layer 2 is optically transparent, and water, an org. solvent or the like is used. The front plate 3 is made of pressure resistant transparent glass or plastics. High contrast is ideally attained by eliminating the different in refractive index between the liq. of the layer 2 and the plate 3, and it is required to satisfy relation represented by the equation (where Ng is the refractive index of the front plate, and Nl is the refractive index of the transparent liq.) with respect to the performance. When the display element is irradiated with rays 5 of radiant light, the corresponding points of the layer 1 generate heat, and the liq. contacting with the points is heated by heat conduction and boiled to form bubbles 4 of steam or vapor in the layer 2. |
