PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as a synthetic raw material of pharmaceuticals such as prostaglandin, etc., with simple procedure, by treating the easily available cyclobutyl aryl ketone in a halogenated carbon solvent in the presence of an aluminum (III) halide, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II (e.g. 2-phenyl-2-cyclopentenone) can be prepared by treating (A) a cyclobutyl aryl ketone of formulaI(R<1> is H, alkyl, aryl or alkoxy; R<2> is alkyl or aryl; X is H, alkyl or alkoxy) e.g. phenyl-1-(p-tolylthio)cyclobutyl ketone obtained in high yield by the reaction of 1-cyano-1-thiocyclobutane with an aryl Grignard reagent, in (B) a halogenated carbon solvent such as chlorobenzene in the presence of (C) an aluminum (III) halide or an iron (III) halide. |
