Converter which can be tilted on trunnions has tuyeres at the bottom and on the sides for the inj'ection of oxygen and fuel. Inclined side tuyeres intersect with their geometrical axis the vertical centre line of the converter at a point which lies below the axis of the trunnions by a distance equal to 0.5-1.0 times from the bottom to the intersection of the trunnion axis with the vertical centre line of the converter. Converter is lined with a refractory layer with bottom and side tuyeres for the injection of oxygen and fuel, and an opening at right angles to the side tuyeres for the taphole of the molten metal. Tuyeres inject as fuel a hydrocarbon mixt. such as natural gas. Centre lines should intersect the vertical axis at a point a distance above the bottom which is 0.5 to 1.0 times the distance (H).
