The rotary internal combustion engine has a piston (10) eccentrically supported in the housing (1) with seals (12) guided so that they can move radially, which constantly bear against the inside wall of a cylinder liner (8) concentrically and rotatably guided in the housing (1). The speed ratio between the piston (10) and the cylinder liner (8) is determined by a gear connection (26, 27). In the housing shell are located the inlet passage (18) and the exhaust passage (20) which, lying opposite one another, each extend through at least 120 DEG over the circumferential area of the housing shell, housing shell areas (21, 22) separating the inlet and exhaust passages (18, 20) from one another being located close to the area of the smallest and the largest radii of the chambers formed by the piston (10) and the seals (12). In the cylinder liner (8) a number of through-passages (23-25) are arranged, which control the inlet and and exhaust of the individual chambers of variable volume. If n is the number of chambers and seals (12), n being an odd number, n+1 DIVIDED 2 through-passages are provided and the gear transmission ratio between the piston (10) and the cylinder liner (8) is n+1 DIVIDED n. <IMAGE>
