Alkaligenes fecalis HRL-1(I) is cultivated in the presence of Mg+2, then added to activated sludge to improve its settleability. Thus, I was cultured in 2 g glucose, 2 g peptone, 1g K2CO3, 0.12 g MgSO4, 1lH2O at 25≦̸C for 24hr to get 350 mg/l star-shape floc(diameter, 2-3 mm), then added to activated sludge. After 3 days, the sludge vol. was reduced by 50%.
