Mixture-compressing, spark ignition internal combustion engine which has two spark plugs per cylinder and comprises a quench zone in the combustion chamber, the one spark plug being arranged in the combustion chamber in the area of the quench zone and the other spark plug in an area of the combustion chamber remote from this area and the spark plugs being operated alternately at each working stroke. In order to optimise the efficiency of the internal combustion engine in the individual load ranges by corresponding control of the ignition timing, from idling speed up to a predetermined partial load range the spark plug arranged in the area of the quench zone ignites and from this partial load range up to the full load range the spark plug arranged in the area remote from the quench zone ignites.
