Compounds of the formula
<CHEM>
wherein
each Rf is independently straight or branched chain perfluoroalkyl of 2 to 18 carbon atoms or perfluoroalkoxyperfluoroalkyl of 4 to 18 carbon atoms,
each R1 is independently straight or branched chain alkylene of 1 to 12 carbon atoms, optionally interrupted by oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen atoms,
R2, R3 and R4 are independently hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkenyl, hydroxyalkyl or alkoxy, and R2 and R3 additionally may, together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached, form a fused benzo ring,
R5 is hydrogen, alkyl, optionally substituted by hydroxy, alkoxy or phenyl,
x is 0, 1 or 2, and
M is hydrogen or an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium or amine cation, or an -SO3M group.
<??>The compounds are prepared in the case that M is H- by reaction of a perfluoroalkyl containing mercaptan of the formula
Rf-R1-SH
with an aromatic aldehyde or ketone of the formula

wherein Rf, R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 have the indicated meanings, in the presence of an acid catalyst, followed if X = 1 or 2 by oxidation.
<??>These compounds are useful as surfactants, water repellents and intermediates.
