The worktable for a leather stretching machine has radial ribs (2) in line with the radial steel wires(24) of the clamping frame(l) laid on it. A central press(28) has outrigger rods(32) with pads(33) which can steady the leather as it is laid on the radial ribs. The radial steel wires act as guides for the clamps which are applied to the hide between the pads and are moved outward by hydraulic power cylinders. This steadies the leather rim and prevents waviness so that the strength and reliability of the leather clamping action is improved.
