<p>PURPOSE:To encode a multilevel picture signal and to perform high-efficiency encoding with a simple constitution, by encoding a signal with less levels for specifying a picture signal roughly by a high-efficiency half-tone picture signal encoding system and then correlating the encoded signals with less levels. CONSTITUTION:An N-valued picture signal (x) is converted by an N1-valuing circuit 8 into an N1-valued signal x'1 having levels less than N specified roughly; the signal x' is sto red in a shift register 10 temporarily and a reference signal SQ'1 from the register 10 is applied to an N1-signal forecasting encoder 12. Further, an ambibient signal SA1 is applied to a forecasting encoder 13 for the N1 picture signal and the signal x'1 is applied to the encoder 12. Further, the signal (x) and reference picture signal SP from a shift register 11 are applied to the encoder 13. Then, the encoders 12 and 13, N1-valued signal compressing encoder 14, N1-valued picture signal compressing encoder 15, and selecting circuit 16 are used to collate encoded signals with less levels, thus encoding a picture with many levels through the simple constitution.</p> |
