A piston pump has a piston which is displaceable in a cylindrical bore in order to suck a fluid into a pump pressure chamber and in order to discharge it from the chamber with pressure. A pressure regulating arrangement is assigned to the pump pressure chamber in order to control the volume of the chamber. The pressure regulating arrangement has a pressure absorbing part, on which a fluid pressure in the pump pressure chamber acts, and a preloading arrangement for preloading the pressure absorbing part. The pressure absorbing part is moved in order to bring the force of the preloading arrangement into equilibrium with a fluid pressure in the pump pressure chamber. The volume of the chamber changes with the movement of the pressure absorbing part in order thus to change the pressure in the chamber. According to the size of the force of the preloading arrangement, the pump works both as a pump providing constant pressure and as a pump providing a constant flow rate.
