<p>PURPOSE:To detect bend points of a character accurately to improve the recognition rate, by obtaining an outline point line on a basis of one point of the outline of the character to be recognized and defining the outline point, which has a maximum length from a line connecting outline points in both ends of this line, as the bend point. CONSTITUTION:In a bend point detecting part, the outline of a character pattern read out from a character pattern memory 31 is traced by an outline tracing part 32, and coordinates of outline points are stored in a memory 33. In a line parameter calculating part 34, parameters (a)-(c) of the expression of a line connecting start point coordinates 35 and K-th outline point coordinates 36 are calculated. I-th outline point coordinates 37 are read out from the memory 33, and the length between these coordinates and the line is calculated by a length calculating part 38. A maximum value of (K-1)- number of calculated lengths is obtained in a maximum value selecting part 39. This maximum value is compared with a threshold value in a discriminating part 40; and if it is smaller than the threshold value, an indication is given to the memory 33 to repeat the operation for the next (K+1)th point. If the maximum value is larger than the threshold value, the outline point giving this maximum value is defined as a bend point.</p> |
