<p>New gelling agents (I) are prepd. by reacting a smectite-type clay having a cation-exchange capacity of at least 75 meq/100g with an organic cation (II) and an organic anion (III) in such a way that a (II)/(III) complex is intercalated with the clay and cation-exchange sites on the clay are substd. by (II). (II) is of formula XR1R2R3R4 (where R1 is a beta, gamma-unsatd. alkyl gp. or a 2-6C hydroxyalkyl gp.; R2 is 12-5 12-60C alkyl; R3 and R4 are aralkyl, 1-22C alkyl or as defined for R1; X is P or N). (I) can be used as gelling agents for polyester laminating resins, polyester gel coats, thixotropic coating compsns. (paints, varnishes, etc.), lubricating greases, mastics, adhesives, cosmetics, inks, paint strippers, etc. (I) are described as auto-activating, i.e. not requiring addn. of polar solvent activators to obtain good dispersability in nonaqueous systems.</p> |
