Liquid-crystal display cell

The electrooptic liquid-crystal display cell has a liquid crystal (4) which is situated between two plates (1) and electrodes (2) and in which dichroic dye molecules (5, 6) are embedded. The embedded dye defines two or more absorption maxima for different wavelengths in the visible region. At least one absorption maximum is characterised by the preferred absorption of light which is linearly polarised parallel to the longitudinal axis of the dye molecules, and at least one further maximum is characterised by the preferred absorption of light which is linearly polarised perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the molecule. This liquid-crystal display, which is based on the so-called guest/host effect, is especially suitable for multicolored representation of characters and images. <IMAGE>
