The automatic gate opener and closer comprises a drive motor fixed to the ground and driving a rack gear linked to the gate frame. The electric motor and its associated reduction gearbox is of the compact, flat type used to drive automotive windscreen wipers. A low voltage DC supply is used to power the motor. The motor is pref. mounted on a nylon support fixed to a tube which is buried vertically in the ground. A nylon guide block ensures that the rack gear remains in contact with the pinion wheel at the output of the reduction gearbox. The rack is pivoted from a bracket mounted on the gate frame away from the gate hinges, allowing the gate to be opened or closed by energising the electric motor with the appropriate polarity.
