To compensate the second-order inertia forces in a four-cylinder in-line internal combustion engine two unbalance elements (5, 6) rotating in opposite directions at twice the speed of the crankshaft are arranged in a centre plane (9) of the cylinder block (10), which centre plane (9) is perpendicular to the axis (7) of the crankshaft (8) and passes through the centre of the crankshaft. The unbalance shafts (12, 13) are supported, on the one hand, at the end and, on the other hand, in the centre plane (9) of the cylinder block, the balance weights (16) being in two parts, one on each side of the centre plane bearing. <IMAGE>
