In dry-cleaning machines having a closed circulation for the drying, recovery of the solvent from steam-containing air is initially carried out in a first step in that the solvent/steam/air mixture circulated in the drying is essentially isobarically cooled and the solvent condensing during this, with the likewise condensing water, is led off from the circulation. In a subsequent second step, the mixture is isentropically expanded, in order to further cool the rich steam/air mixture and again to condense solvent and water, which are then likewise led off from the circulation. The lean steam/air mixture obtained is then heated isobarically and further passed through the fabrics to be dried. The apparatus used therefor is provided with a circulation pipe connected to the cleaning drum, in which circulation pipe is arranged a double countercurrent heat exchanger for cooling the rich steam/air mixture and at least one expansion apparatus for expanding the cooled steam/air mixture. Condensate discharges are provided both on the heat exchanger and on the expansion apparatus.
