The invention relates to skin turning machines for bars and tubes (17, 29, 43, 76). It is proposed to temporarily accelerate the workpiece, which has been finish-skin-turned but is still in the skin turning machine, in order to obtain a gap between it and the workpiece (29) closely following it. Just before the finish-skin-turned workpiece leaves the skin turning machine, the axial velocity is reduced. The workpieces thus pushed out carefully are slightly dispersed with regard to their axial position after leaving the skin turning machine. The acceleration and braking of the withdrawal roller pair (3) is effected via a direct-current motor (4) which is controlled via a pulse generator (6) and one or two length-measuring devices (5, 78). In addition to the withdrawal roller pair (3), a clamping carriage (32) can be provided (Fig. 2). As an alternative to the direct-current motor (4), a transmission connection (in Fig. 3) is provided between the push-in unit (1) and the withdrawal roller pair (3), which transmission connection is equipped with several couplings (61, 62, 63) and operating stages (59, 67). <IMAGE>
