Explosion cladding (explosive plating, explosive bonding, explosive cladding) process for metal workpieces employing a metal sheet (2) whose shape corresponds to the cladding surface of the metal workpiece (1) and which contains the layer (3) of a cladding metal having the required properties, an interlayer (5) which is in intimate contact with the layer (3) of the cladding metal on the side of the cladding surface of the metal workpiece (1), and, following the latter, a transition layer (4) whose chemical base represents the basic element of the workpiece metal, the interlayer (5) being prepared at least from a metal which, owing to its chemical properties, ensures that the diffusion of the elements between the layer (3) of the cladding metal and the transition layer (4) is inhibited. <IMAGE>
