The invention relates to a random propylene copolymer in the form of a non-tacky powder having a high proportion of ethylene and/or a further alpha -olefin, and to a process for the preparation thereof. The copolymer composition contains a propylene component (A) and a component (B) made from ethylene and/or C4-C10- alpha -olefins and is obtained by specific gas-phase polymerisation in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a titanium trichloride composition and an organoaluminium compound. The copolymer composition is characterised in that the specific surface area of the copolymer powder formed is 0.015 m<2>/g or more and that the content of propylene component (A) in the composition is 50% by weight or more.
