In the needle selection device of a knitting machine equipped with Jacquard patterning control means, the knitting needles (2) can be brought into various positions of inactivity, knitting, tuck loop formation and stitch transfer with the aid of cam parts on the carriage (15). To create a simple, safe and reliable needle selection device, a strip (L) extending above the needle bed is equipped with catch levers (11) corresponding to the number of needle tracks (13) and the fineness (gauge) of the needle spacing; the carriage (15) has for each selection point a cam part (14) for pivoting the catch levers (11) and an electromagnet (16) which is controllable for needle selection and is equipped with a switching peg (17), and the knitting needles (2), directly or via associated tip levers (4), are kept pivoted into the selected working position by the catch levers (11) in the catch position. <IMAGE>
