1,205,526. Seals. WORTHINGTON CORP. 25 Feb., 1969 [24 April, 1968], No. 9916/69. Heading F2B. A non-lubricated piston-rod packing for a compressor comprises spaced-apart sealing rings 38 and means, such as passageways 54, 56 in L-section carrier members 26, for controlling leakage of pressure fluid from the compressor space past each sealing ring, controlling the pressure drop across each sealing ring and controlling the contact pressure of each sealing ring against the piston-rod. Each sealing ring is made of bronze-filled P.T.F.E., segmented with tangential joints and urged by a garter spring as well as the controlled pressure fluid into contact with a molybdenum coated piston-rod 18. A back-up ring 40 for each sealing ring is segmented with radial joints and held by a garter spring and a centring spring 46. Wiper rings 50 spaced along the piston-rod are segmented with radial joints, held by garter springs 52 and made of molybdenum for coating the piston-rod; pressure drops across these rings are avoided by enlarging the passageways 56. Cooling water is circulated through passageways 36 in the carrier members but in an alternative embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), potassium (74) is contained in a cavity in the piston-rod to conduct away the heat.
