The telescopic leg may be used for adjustable furniture or gymnasium equipment and consists of an inner component (3) which has a square cross section and has a series of holes (9) along its length. A sliding outer tube (5) fits around the inner tube (3) and the self locking mechanism (7) is fitted inside the end of this outer tube. The mechanism (7) has two guide rings (11a,11b) connected by spacer bars (120,128). The upper guide ring carries a cranked pawl (15) which is spring loaded and snaps into the holes (9) of the inner tube. A blanking sleeve (18) is located between the two guide rings and is moved up or down by the latter to blank off the holes during adjustment until the desired position is attained. The adjustment is achieved by moving the outer sleeve upwards to free the pawl.
