An electrical switching apparatus has at least one contact arrangement (16, 26, 20) on which at least one switching arc is struck during switching off. This switching arc is extinguished by means of controllable semiconductor valves (52) which are allocated to the contact arrangement. In order to simplify the construction, the contact arrangement is constructed as a double-contact arrangement which is known per se and whose contact points (16, 26) open successively in time as a result of a controlled movement sequence of the double-contact arrangement, that contact point (16) which opens first having the at least one controllable semiconductor valve (52) connected in parallel with it. The double-contact point is constructed in a manner known per se as a contact link (20) which can be operated by a drive plunger (40, 42), the drive plunger acting on the contact link outside its centre of gravity during a switching-off operation, so that the point (50) at which it acts is closer to the contact point which is opened first. <IMAGE>
