A tread sole for an aquatic sports shoe which comprises a plane continuous running surface which is provided with a fine profiling consisting of transversely extending wave-shaped or zigzag incisions. In the heel area (5), the running sole is provided with a heel wedge (4) rather than with a heel. The heel wedge consists of a lattice-shaped network (17) of materials. Extending around the heel wedge parallel to the ground contact surface of the running sole is a deep-cut peripheral groove (16). Within the heel area there is provided below the heel of the foot a depression (12) extending throughout the height of the heel wedge (4). This is defined by a relatively rigid peripheral wall (13) on the one hand and a highly flexible elastic membrane (15) of small wall thickness. The dimension of the depression (12) parallel to the running surface of the running sole amounts to approximately 1/3 to 2/3, preferably to approximately 1/2 of the maximum width of the running sole in the heel area (5). The depression permits the heel of the foot to sink to a large depth into the heel wedge in the event that, as is conventional in forms of aquatic sports, the weight of the body is displaced to a large extent towards the rear or towards the rear and in a laterial direction. This enables the entire foot and the entire running surface of the ground contacting surface to maintain contact despite a change in body posture. In this manner, the entire running surface is utilized also with such extreme postures to improve the antiskid effect and at the same time the extreme posture is rendered more convenient for the person.
