PURPOSE:To prevent an adverse reaction in a prophylactic treatment of epilepsy with a highly accurate measurement of valproic acid in serum of a patient, by a method wherein a valproic acid derivative is used as hapten to form a conjugate with a protein which is used as antigen to obtain antibody and then, the antibody thus obtained is used together with a labelled compound of said antigen. CONSTITUTION:A conjugate between a derivative of valproic acid of the formula (wherein, n represents 3-8 and R is SH, CHO or COOH), e.g., 7-mercapto-2- propylheptanoic acid or a salt thereof and albumin or globulin or the like is administered to an animal to form an antibody (reagent A). On the other hand, a compound of formulaIis bonded with a labelled compound (e.g., enzyme) to make a reagent B. The reagents A and B are mixed with the serum of a patient to effect an antigen-antibody reaction. After B/F separation, activity or the like of either of the labelled compounds is measured. In this manner, valproic acid in the blood can be determined at a high accuracy. |
