Such structural elements are suitable, in particular, for building structures, for example for supporting ceilings, floor and wall structures and for load-carrying bridge, ship, vehicle and aircraft structures. The invention has the object of improving as far as possible the bending stiffness and the load capability of such structural elements. Expanding materials and solid elements of specific shape and position subdivided therein are arranged in and with respect to closed cavities. The clamping means may be of a very different type, consistency and expansion dimension. They cause, in particular, a very high longitudinal stress of the structural element, and of its parts and associated elements, supported by molecular forces. These forces are virtually unlimited within their expansion region. They thus prevent bending and kinking of, for example, beams, despite a relatively low material cost to a previously unknown extent. Particularly for the said technical fields, this results in new structural capabilities and applications of fundamental significance. <IMAGE>
