In an electronic control system for vehicles, the operating states of various elements of a vehicle provided with an engine are determined by a multiplicity of measuring probes and sensors which comprise at least one vehicle speed sensor for lacquiring a vehicle speed pulse signal corresponding to the driving speed. In the case of an electronic control of vehicle systems carried out expediently in accordance with the measurement results obtained, when an unusual, actually impossible change in the vehicle speed is determined on the basis of the vehicle speed pulse signal of the vehicle speed sensor the electronic control of a corresponding vehicle system is inhibited as a function of this unusual change in the vehicle speed being determined.
