PRODUCTION OF OPTICAL WAVEGUIDE

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical waveguide of a prescribed measurement, by heating the plate glasses for core and cladding to unify them and then applying the pressure with heat to these unified plate glasses. CONSTITUTION:Both glass base materials 1 and 2 for core and cladding respectively that have a thermal coefficient of expansion equal to each other are cut into the prescribed dimension and polished. Then a sheet of core glass 1 is held between two sheets of cladding glass 2. These glasses are put into a cast 3 of carbon and then heated in an electric oven 4 to be unified. An optical waveguide base material thus obtained is put between two carbon resistance heaters 5 and heated up to a temperature higher than the glass melting point. At the same time, the load is applied evenly to the heaters 5. Thus the glass plate is extended. Thus an optical waveguide is obtained.
