The gamma , delta -unsaturated lactones of formula <IMAGE> in which the index n is used to denote an integer of between 2 and 11, one of the symbols R represents a lower alkyl radical and each of the others a hydrogen atom, are prepared by a process which consists of three stages starting from an allyl alcohol of formula <IMAGE> passing through the formation of a phenylselenide and of its corresponding oxide.
