PURPOSE:To discriminate inter-character pitches and character categories without designation of a format control, by checking the power spectrum density of a projected signal. CONSTITUTION:When a form is carried, the image of form is converted into an electric signal at a solid-state image sensor 1 and amplified 2, then binarized at a binary encoding circuit 3 and this binary coded signal is applied to a line buffer 4, a projection memory 5 and a high speed Fourier transformation circuit FFT 6. The memory 5 stores this binary coded signal to form and store the horizontal projection of the character pattern stored in the buffer 4. The horizontal projection stored in the memory 5 is applied to the FFT 6 as a projection signal. The FFT 6 performs discrete Fourier transformation to this projection signal to obtain a power spectrum density P(k). Based on this density P(k), a cut-out pitch is determined and a character pattern is cut out from the buffer 4 and character recognition is performed via a cutout memory 7. Further, the FFT 6 obtains the P(k) from the output of the circuit 3. |
