Cooling and lubrication of walls of continuous casting moulds - where single liq. consisting of oil or emulsion of oil in water performs both functions

A cooling liq. which is also a lubricant is circulated along the rear surfaces of the mould walls. At least the upper part of the walls is porous; and the pressure of the liq. is controlled so that a predetermined amt. flows through the wall to lubricate the surface of the mould wall in contact with the metal being cast. The pref. cooling liq. consists of a mineral oil; a vegetable oil; or an emulsion of oil in water. The overall result is the simplification of continuous casting plant by using the same liq. for both cooling and lubricating the mould.
