A portable chemical cold generator employs the negative heat of solution of certain salts in solvent to extract heat from the surroundings. The solvent and salt are subsequently regenerated by the application of solar radiation under reduced pressure in the range 10 to 100 m.m.Hg. causing evaporation of the solvent. In the application described a mixture of 1190 gm/litre of urea in water at 20 deg.C is used having a capacity of 3.47 Kcal/gm.mole. The overall weight of the device and charge is limited to 2.5 kg for ease of portability, giving a capacity for the device of 62.8 Kcal per regeneration. The device is an energy-efficient method of generating, intermittently, small quantities of cold.
|
