Alcohols are prepd. as in the Parent Patent by reacting CO with H2 in the presence of a catalyst of formula CuxCoyMzAv. M is Cr, Fe, V and/or Mn. A is alkali metal(s) x is 0.1-1. y is 0.1-1. z is 0.2-1. v is 0.001-0.25 times (x+y+z). A prod. (I) comprising 80-90 wt.% methanol and 10-20% of higher homologues is added directly to petrol. 14-20 wt.% (I) is used per 100 pts. total fuel produced. The mixt. (I) pref. comprises 82-87% methanol and 13-18% higher homologues.
